Sunday, funday?
I slept in an extra half-hour this morning (I forgot to set the alarm and woke up just after 6:30 a.m.), but that was fine, as I had nowhere to specifically be first thing this morning. The only Olympic action going on in the morning was up in the mountains and I am not there yet.
So, after breakfast at the hotel (their breakfast buffet is absolutely incredible and included in my room rate), I went to take the usual train that I take from the hotel, but as it turns out, that train doesn't run on Sundays. So rather than take the bus to the other train station, I decided to walk there and realized it's not a bad walk at all (for future reference, it's good to know).
It does seem that Italians take Sundays off, or at least start later. The streets, with the exception of the large flea market going on outside my hotel, were pretty empty, as were the trains, making the commute into the Main Press Center a little easier than normal. I had some stories to write on the New Hampshire Nordic Coaches Series race in Gilford on Saturday and a few other updates, so I set up camp in the media center right next to a TV, knowing that I wanted to see Lindsey Vonn race (coming up shortly). I got the stories done before the downhill kicked off, which was the goal.
Some people have asked about the Super Bowl. There is no Super Bowl Sunday in Italy, mainly because it starts after midnight, so it will be Super Bowl Monday. I will do my best to stay awake through it and will most likely just watch in the hotel since I have to get an early train in the morning to make my way to the mountains.
For the most part I have enjoyed my time in Milan and look forward to a few more days here at the end of the Olympics. I have started getting the hang of the subway system, with a few minor hiccups, and I have gotten more than my fair share of steps in (31,000+ yesterday) walking both underground and above ground (the walk into the ice hockey arena is a long one).
For now, I'll sit back, watch Lindsey and then maybe go out and see some more of the city.
It was a pretty quiet morning on the streets of Milan outside the Main Press Center on Sunday.
